Therapeutic Listening

Therapeutic Listening Program (TLP), is an evidence-based sound/music therapy created by Sheila Frick a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. It is a program intended to support individuals who experience challenges with sensory processing dysfunction, motor difficulties, as well as listening, attention and communication differences. For more information please visit the creator's webpage Vital Links below

What is Therapeutic Listening and how does it work?

Therapeutic listening is music which must be listened to over specialist headphones.  It has been modified and exaggerated to naturally capture attention. It activates parts of the brain that regulation body function, and how we response and relate to others. Therapeutic listening incorporates the whole body using multiple sensory motor and relationship based strategies.

The program:

Therapeutic Listening involves listening to modulated music through twice a day for 30 minutes, the duration of the program is 12 weeks. The headphones are open air meaning the child can also hear others around them and can talk to others while listening to the music. The child can go about their daily activities while listening to the music (except for watching TV, playing video games and other similar activities). The time period between listening sessions must be at least 3 hours apart.

Therapeutic Listening is not a specific protocol, instead the process relies on a trained therapist to choose each specific modulated music track which is specific to the child’s unique needs.

Who can benefit?

Therapeutic Listening may benefit a wide variety of individuals of various ages who might exhibit:

  • Sensory processing differences

  • Difficulties with regulating their energy level (i.e. too low arousal or hyperactive)

  • Poor attention

  • Difficulties interacting with peers and limited play skills

  • Challenges with transitions or changes in routine

  • Difficulty communicating (both verbal and non-verbal)

  • Difficulties with sleep, bowel and bladder control, and eating (picky eating)

  • Trouble following directions

  • Challenges perceiving and navigating space (spatial awareness)

  • Poor grading of motor movements (body awareness and force control)

  • Motor planning, poor timing and sequencing of motor skills

  • Postural insecurity (fear of heights, playing on playground equipment)
